Cities are reaching for the sky, while in completely contrasting locations, unprecedented “landscapes” have emerged: artificial islands, floating platforms, oil rigs.
They mark those invisible boundaries where economics, technology, and environmental policy intersect. They symbolize both the pinnacle and the end of the fossil fuel era. With the shift away from fossil fuel energy production toward renewable energy, these structures are losing their original function. What remains are massive constructs of an industrial past. How can architecture respond to the changing relationship between industry and the sea?
So i questioned myself: Is it possible that oil rigs, once symbols of fossil-fuel modernity, could become prototypes for a new maritime architecture?
